• Followers, Followers, Followers

  • According to my wife the social media expert, much like location is the key to selling real estate, the key to success in social media is followers, followers, followers. I still have no idea where this venture is going, but Pat has explained that if we attract followers then good things will happen. I’m content with that for now.

  • Pat hasn’t given me an exact number of followers that it will take for us to consider our new venture to be successful, but our good friend  Sarah Hayes Saucedo has close to 120,000 following Thrifty Decor Chick  on Facebook alone. That’s approximately 10,000 times our current following. So I spent some time today trying to find the answer to the question, "How do we get followers?" Apparently there is a very simple answer. All we need to do is go “viral.”

I'm not sure if there is an exact definition of going "viral," but it seems like adding 120 the first day was a pretty substantial start.  The key, however, will be hoping that our original 120 followers start “splitting and reproducing” like a virus. This will happen when they share our posts and recommend us to their friends. Of should I say, IF they . . .

Who has been successful at going viral? According to Emily Bashforth of celebmix.com the top 5 in the world in terms of total social media followers are:

    1. Taylor Swift, 246 million

    2. Cristiano Ronaldo, 238 million

    3. Katy Perry, 219 million

    4. Selena Gomez, 205 million

    5. Rihanna, 150 million

PostScript Living may have actually given me a reason for using one of those things I learned way back in high school math class. (When's the last time you used the Pythagorean Theorem?) Do you suppose that they still teach arithmetic, geometric and exponential progressions or were those just part of that “New Math” I had to endure? I'm a bit out of practice, but I used to be pretty good at math according to Mr. Sims and Mr. Presser (my high school math teachers). So, here goes.

I believe that if our blog grew arithmetically (same number of new followers each day) that we would have more than 1,000 followers by the time we arrive back in the good ol' US of A in about 10 days. That would happen if each of our original followers helped us find another new follower, who in turn helped entice another new follower, and so on. A lofty goal, but I never imagined more than 100 on the first day alone. I’ll remain optimistic.

We had 2 followers on Tuesday (that would be the 2 of us) and we went up to 122 on Wednesday. That's a daily increase of 6000%.  A quick calculation of geometric growth would have us sitting at 1,689,192,602 by Monday. For those that have trouble with math that reads, "one-billion, six-hundred and eighty-nine million, one-hundred and ninety two thousand, six-hundred and two." That’s 22% of the total number of humans on the planet and it would eclipse the COMBINED total of social media followers of the world's top 5 listed above! OK, that's just silly. And the numbers I got for exponential progression included so many zeroes that it caused my calculator to start smoking.

We are hoping you find enough interesting in our observations to share our posts and recommend us to your friends. Or maybe we'll just bring a smile to your face every now and then.

Despite the fun that I’ve had with this first blog, it is time to explore more of France.  We're heading to the market in Lourmarin this morning. Au revoir for now. Lee
